GROW (Goals, Reality, Options, Way forward) is a simple yet highly effective way of coaching individuals and teams to unlock their potential and achieve their goals. As the coach you iterate through each of the signposts.
This doesn’t have to be completely linear you might pass through GROW dozens of times in a coaching session. You follow simple questioning techniques as the idea is to prompt the person your coaching to do most of the talking and thinking, remember you don’t need to be an expert in the performance area.
Firstly let’s establish GOALS
What are you trying to achieve ?
what does success look like ? What would it feel like if you where successful ?
why is important to you ?
What control and opportunities do you have ?
describe the Reality
What does the Present situation look like ?
Action so far – what have you achieved so far ?
What is stopping you, obstacles in the way or resistance ?
What resources are available ?
What control do you have ?
examine the Options that are available
What approaches could you use to achieve the goals
What else could you do, what else, what else (this repetuon is very useful, keeps people thinking)
Do you need More time, finances, do you need to influence your boss
Best outcome – what is success
Which options have the highest degree of success ?
Which options would Give you the most satisfaction ?
Finally what is the best Way Forward
What is our option ?
How will this help you ?meet your objectives ?
If there is ?resistance how do we remove or mitigate it
?Who needs to know about your plans ? Communication plan ?
?Whose support do you need to make the option work ?
?How confident and committed to these plans are you ?
?Have you gained commitment and are now taking of responsibility
competencies and behaviours
